LCC hears of community corrections efforts

Rush County Local Coordinating Council members met recently and heard a presentation from the county’s community corrections director Ashley Stevens.

In January 2013, as a means to relieve overcrowding issues at the Rush County Jail and to find a means to keeps non-violent offenders employed and with their families, the county formed a county corrections board. Board members come from various fields: law enforcement, judges, the general public and the county probation department, to name a few.

Inmates selected for the program are required to have a home monitoring device on them and many are placed on house detention, in lieu of serving their court imposed jail sentence and are required to pay for the device. According to Stevens, since beginning operation in July 2013, 88 inmates have been enrolled in the program with roughly 10 percent (nine individuals) violating the programs requirements.
