Autry State Prison tied to phone scam

MITCHELL CO., GA (WALB) -

A nationwide phone scam is beginning to unravel and investigators believe it was being operated out of Autry State Prison in Mitchell County.

A New Jersey sheriff's officer arrested a correctional officer from Alamo, GA and an inmate in connection with the case.

Investigators believe an inmate used a cell phone to scam residents in New Jersey out of money.

Clarinda Carter, a correctional officer at Wheeler State Correctional Facility in Alamo, and Covian Camp, an inmate at Autry State Prison are suspected conspirators behind the phone scam. They have been charged with two counts of Theft by Extortion and two counts of impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer.
