Chaplains help inmates express grief at loved one’s death

Every day, inmates in Ohio’s prisons are told that a loved one is gravely ill or has died.

With every notification, inmates are reminded that they have lost the freedom to grieve with family and friends.

Prison chaplains, religious groups, psychologists and others say that grief, often suppressed and unaddressed, grows during a prison term. They point out that little attention is paid to inmates’ emotional problems in an environment where showing signs of grief — and weakness — is dangerous.
