| State lawmaker pushing for mandatory minimum sentences for convicted felons caught with guns |

Inside the Harrisburg office of state Rep. Todd Stephens (R — 151st Dist.) hangs a photo of Dorian “Troy” Mathis — a convicted murderer serving a life sentence in state prison for gunning down another man in a Norristown crackhouse in 2004. Stephens, then a Montgomery County assistant district attorney, successfully prosecuted the case. The photo, he says, is emblematic not only of the legion of violent criminals he watched come through the system during his 10 years in the DA’s office, but also the scourge of gun crime that continues to plague Pennsylvania. “I am reminded every day of the fact that, look, there are people out there who just will not follow the law, and they are going to hurt other people,” says Stephens. “I think we’ve got to take our crimes involving guns more seriously, and this bill does exactly that.” Read More. |
