Three people have died and seven were wounded in a confrontation between rival criminal gangs early last Wednesday morning at the El Rodeo jail, 30 kilometers (19 miles) northeast of Caracas - just one of 30 jails throughout Venezuela that hold more than 20,000 convicts, often under sub-human conditions. According to Lt. Col. Erly Rojas, the general manager of prisons at Venezuela's Ministry of Interior & Justice (MIJ), when troops gained control of the prison they discovered three inmates were dead and seven wounded - one them in a serious life-threatening condition. Rojas says that officials had conducted a search of the prison just 24 hours earlier in search of firearms and home-made weapons. The confrontation between criminal gangs took place during the night but for reasons of security, officres had not been able to enter the jail during the night. |
