| IYC-Joliet stays closed in state budget approved last week |

The state budget approved last week does not include money to reopen the shuttered Illinois Youth Center-Joliet, a project that was proposed by Gov. Pat Quinn earlier this year. The McDonough Street facility was to be used for inmates with severe mental illnesses. The Illinois Department of Corrections is under pressure from a 2007 federal lawsuit to provide such a facility, and local officials have been looking for ways to put IYC-Joliet back to use. But Illinois doesn’t have the money to reopen the IYC-Joliet in the budget approved last week, said state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood. He was among the lawmakers who approved a $35.7 billion spending plan for fiscal year 2015 based off an expected Jan. 1 rollback of the 2011 tax hike. Read More. |
