Five former Genesee County (Mich.) Jail officers accused of allowing two inmates to have sex have been charged with felonies, five months after misdemeanor charges were dismissed. One of the prisoners was a 45-year-old woman in jail for prostitution and larceny and a 37-year-old man jailed on a murder charge. "We couldn't get anything done with the lower charges, but we didn't want to give up on this," said Genesee County Undersheriff James S. Gage. "We still believe there have been serious crimes committed here." The five charged are Lamell Adams, 45, of Flint; Lila M. Clark, 55, of Flint Township; Wendy K. Leverette-McIntosh, 43, of Flint; Gwendolyn R. Thompson, 33, of Flint Township; and Joshua J. White, 25, of Flint. Flint District Judge Michael D. McAra last Wednesday approved warrants charging each with a common law offense, a 5-year felony, The Flint Journal said. Arraignments are expected soon. The warrant language is similar to that in the original charge, when the five were charged with neglect of duty by a public official, a one-year misdemeanor. In the new charge, the fired jail officers also are accused of giving contraband to the inmates, besides allowing them to have sex. The items included food, tobacco and other unnamed materials, the department said. The accusations cover the period Jan. 1-Feb. 5 |
