State to continue pursuing money to reopen IYC-Joliet

The Illinois Department of Corrections will continue to seek money to reopen the shuttered the Illinois Youth Center-Joliet to house mentally ill prisoners, a spokesman said.

“As Governor Quinn has said, this is an incomplete budget,” Tom Shaer, spokesman for the state agency, said in an email. “The Illinois Department of Corrections will continue to work with the General Assembly to address areas of concern.”

The roughly $30 million in operational costs needed for the facility to reopen is contingent upon the 2011 income tax hike staying permanent, the governor’s office has stated. Gov. Pat Quinn’s proposed budget, which is based on the income tax staying as is, calls for about $1.7 million to revamp the facility, lawmakers have said.
