| After Scandals, Task Force to Study Mental Health Aid for Inmates |

NEW YORK—Mayor Bill de Blasio has directed a task force to reform how New York City’s corrections system treats the mentally ill, particularly incarcerated individuals where approximately 40 percent have mental health issues. The Task Force on Behavioral Health and the Criminal Justice System is to “transform the city’s criminal justice system,” according to the mayor’s office. “For far too long, our city’s jails have acted as de facto mental health facilities,” said de Blasio in a statement. “Everyone deserves access to quality medical and mental health care—and addressing these needs within the criminal justice system will improve public safety for all New Yorkers.” Read More. |
