| NJ inmates serve maximum sentences at double the national rate, |

More inmates than ever are serving maximum prison sentences in the United States, a new study released yesterday says, and New Jersey is among the states that keep the most people imprisoned for the longest time allowable. According to the comprehensive report made public by the Pew Charitable Trust, New Jersey has double the national rate of inmates "maxing out" their sentences. Indeed, more than 40 percent of the state’s inmate population serve their maximum sentences, compared with about 20 percent of inmates across the nation, according to "Max Out: The Rise in Prison Inmates Released without Supervision."
