DOC director responds to concerns

Department of Corrections Director Jose San Agustin said yesterday he wants to see the prison come into compliance with a 1991 settlement agreement by next year.

In 1991, the federal and local governments entered into the agreement following concerns that conditions at the island's prison violated inmates' civil rights.

Twenty-three years later, most of the issues have been resolved, except for concerns related to inmates' medical, dental and mental health care.
