Four inmates used weapons created by putting padlocks in their socks to temporarily overtake officers at New Lisbon Correctional Institution in Wisconsin and send eight to the hospital, officials say. In the wake of the disruption, a committee is reviewing inmate access to padlocks at the medium security prison about 70 miles northwest of Madison that opened last summer and houses nearly 1,000 inmates. Marty Beil, executive director of the Wisconsin State Employees Union, said the committee also will look into reports that some New Lisbon inmates were transferred there from maximum security institutions before they qualified for the move. Bill Clausius, Department of Corrections spokesman, declined comment, citing the ongoing investigation into what happened. However, he confirmed that inmates in medium security prisons get their own secure footlockers. |
