| Sheriff Marlin Gusman outlines hurricane evacuation plan for inmates |

Nearly nine years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city and its jail, leaving many inmates in the dark without food and water, Sheriff Marlin Gusman on Tuesday announced the jail is prepared this year for evacuating inmates in advance of a storm. "There were a lot of lessons learned from that storm," Gusman said at a news conference. He was flanked by sheriff's officials from St. Bernard and West Baton Rouge parishes, and an official from the Louisiana Department of Corrections. Gusman said he will evacuate inmates by bus 60 hours before any hurricane that is forecast to make landfall as a Category 2 or higher, with winds of 96 mph or greater.
