Prison official goes undercover to experience solitary confinement

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —Major changes are coming to New Mexico's prisons after the secretary of the Department of Corrections spent time in solitary confinement.

Secretary Gregg Marcantel spent two days in segregation, just like inmates do, to see what works and what doesn't about the system. He said he pretended to be deaf so he didn't have to respond when inmates asked who he was.

"You really need to feel it. You need to taste it. To smell it. You need to see it firsthand," Marcantel said.
