The first inmates have moved into the Federal Correctional Institution at Hazelton, W. Va., and more will be arriving in the coming weeks.
The Preston County prison, which is planning a dedication ceremony in the next six weeks, accepted 41 transfers two weeks ago from federal prisons in Beckley, Morgantown and Glenville, and the U.S. Penitentiary in Lee County, Va.
The inmates moved into the minimum-security satellite camp that houses 128 men. The main prison will eventually house up to 1,500 inmates, spokesman David Young said Nov. 12.
An adjacent women's prison will house more than 500 inmates.
FCI Hazelton is the newest prison in West Virginia.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons also operates the minimum-security women's facility at Alderson, where domestic diva Martha Stewart is in the second month of a five-month sentence for lying to investigators about why she sold ImClone Systems Inc. stock in 2001.
