| CCI to add $6.5 million health unit |

MADISON – A larger health services unit at Columbia Correctional Institution is being planned to accommodate an inmate population that has increased by 54 percent in nearly 30 years. The project is one of the largest at CCI since it was built in 1985. On Wednesday, the State Building Commission approved $176,000 in planning funds to design a $6.47 million, 14,000-square-foot structure that would house the medical and dental services provided to CCI’s inmates. The Portage-based prison was designed as a maximum security facility for 450 inmates. However, that number has steadily increased to 830 inmates, according to the Department of Corrections.
