Ocean County (N.J.) authorities are seeking adult trials for four Toms River High School North seniors accused of targeting homeless people for random assaults. Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Anthony Pierro said Nov. 12 that he filed paperwork asking the Family Division of state Superior Court to remove the cases from the juvenile justice system. He cited the cruel nature of the attacks. Authorities allege that the four 17-year-olds, along with Frank Novak, 18, of Toms River, went searching for homeless people - an activity they called "bum hunting" - in the woods off Route 37 last month. In four cases, they attacked people with pipes, baseball bats, bricks and a golf club, authorities said. One victim, 50-year-old Larry Radomski, suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a fractured arm. The names of the 17-year-olds were not released because they were charged as juveniles. If convicted as juveniles on the most serious charge against them, second-degree aggravated assault, the four youths face maximum terms of three years in a youth correctional facility. They could receive up to 10 years in prison if convicted in the adult system, Pierro said. |
