Prison commissioner 'proud' of inmate health care record

Two companies that provide medical and mental health care to inmates in Alabama's prison system called a recent Southern Poverty Law Center report on the subject "grossly inaccurate."

The report, released Tuesday by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program, found that many inmates in need of medical attention are ignored, misdiagnosed or forced to wait long periods of time before getting treatment.

An SPLC letter to the Alabama Department of Corrections also cited what it believes to be numerous violations of federal laws related to inmates who have disabilities and serious physical and mental illnesses.
