| Older killers get periodic attempts at parole |

Earlier this month, a man convicted of brutally slaying his six children in Rockford 36 years ago had an interview with an Illinois Prisoner Review Board member at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro. Simon Peter Nelson, now 82, is one of 220 inmates from an original 16,000 or so still in the state Department of Corrections who received indeterminate sentences under old Illinois law and are eligible for parole hearings every few years. The interview was a first step toward a hearing before the full board, which would be Nelson's 18th such hearing since 1986. It takes approval from a majority of Prisoner Review Board members — currently eight votes — for an inmate to be paroled. Read More. |
