| SPLC files suit against prisons over health care |

The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Alabama Department of Corrections contending that it fails to provide constitutionally adequate medical and mental health care to inmates. Filed jointly by the SPLC and the Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program, the suit also contends that the ADOC fails to provide disabled inmates with the accommodations and services required by the American with Disabilities Act and that it fails to provide due process when medicating inmates against their will. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Montgomery, comes on the heels of a report released by both groups last week documenting what they contend is discrimination against inmates with disabilities and instances of inmates in need of medical or mental health care who were ignored, misdiagnosed or forced to wait long periods of time before getting treatment.
