A coroner's report found that an inmate died from cocaine and alcohol poisoning and not from a shot by a Taser stun gun, police said. Dwayne Anthony Dunn, 33, was arrested Oct. 4 outside of a supermarket. Lafayette, La., police said officers used a Taser stun gun to subdue him after he resisted arrest. He was booked with disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and misrepresentation during booking. Shortly after his arrival at the parish jail, he was placed on medical watch by the jail staff and later transported to a hospital where he died, authorities said. Last Thursday, police spokesman Cpl. Mark Francis said a Lafayette Parish coroner's report indicated that cocaine and alcohol poisoning killed Dunn. After Dunn's death, city police suspended widespread use of Taser guns for about two weeks. The guns were reinstated after the department got software to track the use of the guns, which emit electric darts that carry a high-voltage shock. "From the onset, we always believed we were not responsible for the death of Mr. Dunn," Francis said. "What we looked at was policy, making sure officers follow policy and the only thing we've done since the death of Mr. Dunn is add new software so we can track and monitor the use of the Taser by individual officers." |
