| Local filmmakers hope to shackle prison system misconceptions |

A local documentary will soon air on PBS. “Outcasts: Surviving the Culture of Rejection,” written and directed by Stephen Newton and produced by Jane Hillhouse, will debut on East Tennessee PBS on July 13 at 7 p.m. The film is about the history and evolution of overincarceration and discusses the difficulties of re-entry into society after imprisonment. “It’s about the high cost of recidivism and its effect on families and communities,” Hillhouse said.
