| New sentencing law's local impact unclear |

Offenders convicted of certain crimes charged after July 1 will be spared years in prison, or face no jail time at all, as the state's sweeping criminal code reform takes effect next month, a change that officials say will likely mean more low-level offenders punished locally in the jail, adult probation and community corrections. The legislation's impact on local resources, though, remains to be seen, especially as the question of resources is intertwined with the law's effect on the Indiana Department of Correction, St. Joseph County law enforcement officials said. "It will affect all of us in the system from the jail all the way to parole," said Greg Cress, superintendent of the South Bend Community Re-Entry Center, on the law's effect on state and local resources.
