A female inmate says she was sexually assaulted last week at the Charleston County (S.C.) jail after officers mistakenly put a male prisoner in her cell. Four detention officers have been placed on administrative leave without pay while deputies investigate the woman's allegations, said jail administrator Keith Novak said. Both inmates were in the jail's 26-cell wing for prisoners who violate the rules, Novak said. The 23-year-old woman, in jail since May on charges of armed robbery, forgery and resisting arrest, was asleep in her cell Saturday morning when officers brought in a 31-year-old male inmate, arrested in October for armed robbery, kidnapping, burglary and other charges, authorities said. Investigators aren't sure why the male inmate was placed in the female inmate's cell because there was room in another cell for a male inmate, Novak said. Detention officers might have grabbed the wrong door or failed to notice the female inmate's gender because she was curled up asleep under a blanket. But that is not an excuse because the name and gender of all prisoners are kept on a roster sheet in the wing, Novak said. The male inmate slapped the woman in the face and forced her to perform a sexual act, the female inmate told deputies. Officers separated the two inmates about three hours later, Novak said. Novak said he could not recall a similar incident happening at the jail. |
