MDOC Director says prison museum is Jackson accepting its history

JACKSON, MI – As much as anyone, Dan Heyns is well aware of the role Jackson has played in Michigan's prison history.

Before Heyns was named the director of the Michigan Department of Corrections in 2011, he served for decades in the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, including eight years as sheriff.

Heyns spoke of embracing Jackson's history, not shunning it, during media day at the Cell Block 7 Prison Museum at the State Prison of Southern Michigan on Cooper Street on Monday, June 23.
