Jackson prison now mostly off limits to television and film crews

JACKSON, MI – It is unlikely film or television crews will have access to the State Prison of Southern Michigan in the near future.

The Michigan Department of Corrections has requested the Michigan Film Office not publicize the prison facility, parts of which still house inmates, as a possible filming location for future movie or television projects.

MDOC spokesman Russ Marlan said the opening of the new Cell Block 7 Prison Museum within one of the vacant cell blocks is the reason.

The MDOC wants to avoid conflict with the other outside operations happening inside the cell block. That includes the museum, as well as the Jackson Journeys prison tours that previously visited 7 block.
