| Judges decide to wait on jail overcrowding |

COLDWATER — Prisoners hoping for an early release because of overcrowding at the Branch County Jail may have to wait a bit longer. Branch County Sheriff John Pollack declared June 18 “a jail overcrowding state of emergency,” pursuant to a 1982 law to allow reduction of sentences and bond reductions. The declaration came after 13 consecutive days with the night time inmate count exceeding the 142 maximum established by the Michigan Department of Corrections. The law only requires the jail to have 10 empty beds during a count between 12-4 a.m. to comply with the law before a new count begins. Read More. |
