| County inmate switches IDs, flees |

An inmate at Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque, N.M., used another man's identification to escape just in time for Thanksgiving. Bernalillo County Undersheriff Sal Baragiola said 21-year-old Adam Wayne Isler colluded with another inmate to switch identities so he could be released. Inmate Ryan William Webb was awaiting release after posting bond Wednesday when the switch occurred, Baragiola said. "We're still investigating whether there was intimidation involved," Baragiola said. The mix-up came from the inmates switching identifiers, Baragiola said, which consist of a picture, date of birth, address and social security number. "The inmates looked strikingly similar," Baragiola said. "Our investigation will entail how he was able to pose as the other inmate and get by the corrections officers." Webb could face additional charges of assisting an escape and conspiracy depending on investigation results, Baragiola said. MDC Director Harry Tipton said jail officials noticed the gaffe when Webb tried to get out Thursday. "When we checked, it showed it showed he had already been released," Tipton said. "We don't know what led to the breakdown in the system. What we do know is Isler escaped using Webb's identifiers." Jail officials are conducting an investigation along with the Sheriff's Department. Baragiola said Isler was at MDC awaiting a court appearance. He was transferred recently from the New Mexico Penitentiary in Santa Fe where he was being held for unspecified charges, Baragiola said. "We have a few leads we're following," Baragiola said. "Odds are he'll be caught and back in jail soon." |
