Edmonton, Canada, police called out the homicide unit last night after a prisoner, described as a member of the Crazy Dragons gang, was severely beaten at the Edmonton Remand Centre. Cops were summoned to the downtown detention centre at 9660 104 Ave. around 7:15 p.m. "An inmate was assaulted," said Insp. Dan Jones of Edmonton Police Service. "It's a serious assault and I've called out the homicide unit." Jones said the prisoner was attacked by a number of inmates. "We have a number of suspects," he said. Emergency medical services took the victim to University hospital. Officials said the 24-year-old man, who was unconscious when paramedics arrived, was likely hit with a blunt object. The prisoner was in critical condition with potentially life-threatening injuries. Sources said the man was in the detention facility facing a first-degree murder charge. |
