July 14--COAL TOWNSHIP -- An anti-prison advocacy group has released a list of 22 demands from inmates at State Correctional Institution-Coal Township. They seek an improved menu, but more than that, they ask that "basic human rights" be upheld. According to a petition on Change.org, "We stand with the men at Coal Township and are asking that the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections take immediate steps to meet these 22 demands." Inmates seek larger meal portions, permission to form cultural associations, the hiring of a full-time doctor, and changes to make their families more comfortable: permission to smile in photographs, board games and playing cards for family visits, better seating in the visiting area.
