Kentucky Corrections Commissioner John D. Rees has asked that the company that runs the Beattyville prison where a riot broke out two months ago be fined $10,000. Rees asked Finance Secretary Robbie Rudolph in a letter last Monday to fine Corrections Corporation of America for failing to adequately organize, equip, train and maintain 20 response team members. The letter was released last Tuesday. A state report also released last Tuesday said only seven response team members were available the evening of the Sept. 14 riot. The report said the riot grew larger than most inmates had intended and "was created by a lack of communication up and down the chain of command and too many changes within a short period of time." The riot involving Kentucky and Vermont inmates ended without serious injury or escapes. It's the first time the state has sought to fine a private prison operator, including CCA, which owns and runs the 800-inmate Lee Adjustment Center. |
