Fugitive wanted in Rutherford County apprehended in Alabama

LA VERGNE — A man charged with child rape, possession of explosives and aggravated kidnapping was tracked down and arrested in Elkmont, Alabama, two days after he led four local law enforcement agencies on a dangerous pursuit that began in La Vergne, according to a news release from the city.

James J. Hummer first came to the attention of La Vergne Police on July 6 when Officer John Hughes was dispatched to a domestic assault call, the release states.

When Hughes arrived on the scene, he spotted the suspect’s car leaving and attempted to stop him, according to the release. The pursuit continued into the Smyrna town limits where Smyrna Police Department joined the chase.
