| Work release funds to pay for added correctional officers |

CROWN POINT — The balance of funds in the Lake County Sheriff’s work release program have been transferred to the Lake County Jail to pay for new correctional officers. Last week, the county council approved the transfer of about $433,000 that would have paid for salaries and benefits of the work release employees through the end of 2014. The revenues will be used to pay for the 24 new correctional officers Sheriff John Buncich is required to hire for the jail’s new mental health wing at the jail. The wing is expected to open in late August. The hires are part of the Department of Justice mandate that has hung over the jail since 2011. The DOJ has been monitoring the facility with twice-a-year inspections since the 2011 settlement of a 2007 lawsuit by inmates claiming inhumane conditions and a lack of adequate healthcare at the jail.
