Conn. DOC faces inquiry on overtime costs

State officials are investigating whether correction officers padded their overtime with hours they didn't work.
Connecticut Department of Correction records show that 51 officers were paid nearly $1.3 million in overtime in the 2002-2003 budget year to shuttle inmates between prison to court, according to The Hartford Courant.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell called that figure "unacceptable." She wrote a letter to Correction Commissioner Theresa LantzĀ  [Nov. 18], directing her to investigate the "extraordinarily high" overtime charges.
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is also investigating the matter. He said he received an allegation from a confidential informant that the officers might have padded their time sheets.
"We're treating it as a whistle-blower complaint," Blumenthal said.
