| South Dakota aims to reduce juvenile custody rate |

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A group of lawmakers hopes to find ways to reduce the number of children in Department of Corrections custody in South Dakota. Jim Seward, general counsel for Gov. Dennis Daugaard, told the Argus Leader the group is tasked with finding ways to divert youth away from commitments at the state's juvenile facilities in Custer, Plankinton and Sioux Falls. "We're trying to ask, 'is there something different we should be doing with this child but we aren't?'" Seward said. "We may find that we've made the right decision on every commitment, but we're going to take a hard look at what we're doing." Read More. |
