| N.J. bail reform could help county budgets, bring changes to corrections services |

It's looking more and more likely that bail reform will become a reality in New Jersey, as the state Assembly is preparing to vote Monday on two measures. One aspect is a constitutional amendment that would allow judges to deny bail to the most dangerous offenders, while the other is legislation that would give low-level offenders access to a pre-trial program to avoid lengthy jail stays stemming from inability to pay bail or fines. Both measures have bipartisan support in the legislature and from local officials, who anticipate the reform could reduce correctional service costs and spur more interest in jail regionalization.
