A female inmate accused of attacking an officer Monday at the Steuben County (N.Y.) Jail will face a felony assault charge. Deputies said Town of Bath native Rebekah A. Dais, 19, jumped a female corrections officer about 8 a.m. during the morning cell check. Dais managed to inflict minor cuts and bruises before more officers arrived and restrained her, said Sheriff Richard C. Tweddell. The teen did not use any kind of weapon, Tweddell said. Officers do not carry lethal weapons, but the officer may have carried a self-defense spray, Tweddell said. The corrections officer, whose name is being withheld, was treated and released from Ira Davenport Hospital in Bath. She returned to work Monday afternoon, the sheriff said. The inmate was returned to her cell unharmed, he said. Dais was being held on charges of grand larceny and petit larceny related to credit card thefts in Corning. She was not trying to escape, he said. "She was mad about something," Tweddell said. "She was taking it out on the corrections officer, or trying to. Everybody did what they were supposed to do." Dais was arraigned Monday in Bath Town Court on a charge of second-degree assault, a Class D felony. She will remain in custody without bail while awaiting a Dec. 26 court appearance. |
