Ionia prison workers protest staffing they say led to escape

IONIA, Mich. (WZZM) -- Two dozen correctional officers Friday held pickets urging that manned gun towers and perimeter patrols be restored to Ionia and all prisons statewide. They contend those procedures contributed to the February escape of convicted killer Michael Elliot.

Those claims were supported in an investigation released last month by Attorney General Bill Schuette.

Paul Jensen, a correctional officer and union official, told WZZM 13, "The Attorney General recommended a number of things and in my opinion, the Department of Corrections should take a look at those and institute a number of them.
