| Houston is grilled on prison crowding |

LINCOLN — Nebraska prison officials have known about the need to address prison overcrowding since at least 2006, but instead of pressing to build new prisons, they instead opted for “no-cost” ways to reduce the inmate population. State legislators on Friday pressed former Corrections Director Bob Houston for answers about prison overcrowding, solitary confinement and mental health treatment available to prisoners, in the first hearing of the Department of Correctional Services Special Investigative Committee. State Sen. Steve Lathrop of Omaha, committee chairman, asked Houston several questions relating to a 2006 report showing that the department would have to add 1,300 beds, conservatively, to keep up with increasing prison population.
