The state legislature restored prison mitigation money to Walpole in a nearly unanimous effort, overriding the governor’s $2.2 million veto for prison host towns. In what Rep. John Rogers (D-Norwood) called a bipartisan effort, the legislature overturned Gov. Deval Patrick’s prison mitigation veto last Wednesday, bringing $2.2 million back to help prison host towns like Walpole. As a result, Rogers said Walpole will see about $800,000 as a reimbursement for prison aid costs some time this fall. Rogers said the House unanimously approved fully restoring prison mitigation money on Wednesday afternoon, followed shortly by Senate approval. Patrick vetoed it in the state budget in July, calling it an unsupported program. The override means $800,000 for Walpole, a sum that usually goes toward capital improvements. Read More. |
