City Council stands against Sheriff's plan to house mentally ill inmates

NEW ORLEANS —The New Orleans City Council is taking a stand against Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman's proposal to build additional beds at the prison that's already under construction alongside Interstate 10.

Instead of building more beds, city leaders want the sheriff to relocate other prisoners, in order to make room for sick and mentally ill inmates to get proper care.

The city council wants to relocate all Plaquemines Parish prisoners and Louisiana Department of Corrections-sentenced inmates that are currently being housed at Orleans Parish Prison.
