A Lumberton, N.C., teenager who was in leg irons led sheriff's deputies on a 30-minute foot chase on Nov. 29 after he escaped at the courthouse. Nathaniel Sampson, 19, was charged with misdemeanor escape from a jail and misdemeanor damage to government property, according to sheriff's Maj. Billy Strickland. Sampson, who had appeared in court for a probation violation, escaped at about 1 p.m. as several inmates were being loaded into a sheriff's van at the rear entrance of the courthouse for transport to the Robeson County jail, Strickland said. About six deputies and several Lumberton policemen chased Sampson on foot. Sheriff's Sgt. Jimmy Sessoms found Sampson hiding in a storage building behind Floyd Mortuary on East Fifth Street, Strickland said. "He was wearing civilian clothes and that's why he probably got as far as he did," Strickland said. Strickland said Sampson then attempted a second escape. In that instance, he was able to break out of the leg irons while inside in a holding cell at the courthouse. Sampson was jailed under $5,500 bail. |
