When the deputies came for him, Shawn Christopher Berry couldn’t breathe. He was in the midst of an asthma attack. He’d had the respiratory condition for 22 years, took Advair — an attack preventative — and used a Ventolin inhaler, said his mother, Sherry Thornhill, of Culpeper. She said Berry was doing his nebulizer treatment when Orange County sheriff’s deputies entered the Rapidan house he rented on Hopewell Road with a warrant for his arrest. Berry, 37, died two days later, on Aug. 9, in the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange. State police are investigating. At the time of his Aug. 7 arrest, Berry was wanted in several jurisdictions on a variety of charges: in Fairfax, working as a contractor without a license and financial exploitation of a mentally incapacitated person; in Prince William County, failure to appear in court and obtaining money by false pretenses; and in Maryland, heroin possession and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute.
