| Mankato passes restrictions on housing offenders |

MANKATO — The Mankato City Council approved restrictions aimed at ensuring people being housed after serving prison sentences are not concentrated in certain neighborhoods and are kept a distance from schools and certain other facilities. "The requirement of separation of like facilities is not too onerous," City Manager Pat Hentges told the council as he made the recommendation, which passed unanimously Monday evening. The issue came to a head recently when the city and neighbors learned that a Record Street rental house is being used by the Minnesota Department of Corrections to house predatory offenders who have finished prison terms and are in the department's "intensive supervised release program." Under the new ordinance, the corrections department will have to apply for a rental license for housing offenders. They will have to hold a neighborhood meeting when applying for the license.
