A Savannah, Ga., juvenile corrections officer landed in the hospital last week after trying to break up a fight. It happened at the Savannah Regional Youth Detention Center. Around 1:45pm, the officer noticed some horseplay in the recreation yard and thought it could be a fight. When he got in the middle, one inmate punched him in the face. Detention center officials say a group of inmates were playing basketball when an apparent fight broke out. The corrections officer went to break it up. But someone gave him a bloody nose. He was taken to Memorial Health as a precautionary measure. A special incident report and investigation are underway. Officials plan on interviewing the corrections officer, the kids involved, and other people who may have seen what happened to determine if the punch was thrown intentionally or by accident. The officer's name has not been released, but he is expected to leave the hospital soon. Youth detention officials are calling this a minor incident. If their investigation does determine who threw the punch and that it was intentional, charges could be filed against the inmate. |
