| Symposium to focus on Iowa prisons |

For Kat Litchfield, co-organizer of a symposium this weekend meant to educate and connect people with an interest in Iowa prisons, the catalyst for her project was an unusual case of déjà vu. Litchfield was selling books at Barnes & Noble in Coralville in 2003 when she met Kathy Leland, then the education supervisor at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. When Litchfield asked why Leland was purchasing multiple copies of the same book, Leland explained that she ran a book group at the prison and invited Litchfield to attend, which she did for about eight months. "It was enough that I felt I belonged there, and it was part of my life," Litchfield said. "I didn't realize at the time, of course, that it would be meaningful to remember the details." Read More. |
