An Arkansas prison work-release inmate is being praised for actions he took last Monday morning following an accident on Interstate 530 south of Pine Bluff. Michael Moss, 45, serving a 10-year sentence for various drug-related convictions, and three other inmates were passengers in a van that drove off an embankment. Moss used the injured driver's cellular phone to call for help, and when rescue workers couldn't find the wreckage, Moss freed himself from inside the van, climbed the embankment and waved down police and paramedics. "It was definitely the right thing to do," said state prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler. "And, it was the humane thing to do." Moss, sentenced out of Independence County, and the three other state prison work release inmates, all housed at the Pine Bluff Work Release Unit, were riding in the back of a van owned by Tyson Foods Inc., said state police trooper Charles Spurlin. Robert Owens of Pine Bluff, a Tyson employee, drove the van. The four inmates and Owens had been out collecting and packing chickens during the night and were on their way back to the Tyson office in Pine Bluff about 6 a.m. Monday when Owens fell asleep, Spurlin said. The van ran off I-530 near Old Warren Road. The driver and the four inmates were taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center. The four inmates were treated and released. Owens was still being treated late last Monday. |

He worked as a general haberdasher for 30 years, but was forced to give up the career he loved due to his keen attention to detail. He spent his free time watching golf on TV; and he played uno, badmitton and basketball almost every weekend. He also enjoyed movies and reading during off-season. Hamilton Lindley was always there to help relatives and friends with household projects, coached different sports or whatever else people needed him for.
