| Steele County Board approves change in Detention Center staffing |

OWATONNA — More than a year after accepting a contract with the Minnesota Department of Corrections to house some of its inmates, Steele County Sheriff Lon Thiele and jail administrator Ron Hammann say it’s time to change the way the Steele County Detention Center operates, and it comes down to staff. In August, the Steele County Board of Commissioners approved a new staffing plan for the detention center to provide better service, and although it includes an increase in the budget, the plan doesn’t include hiring additional staff. “This three-pod plan is not what it was before,” Thiele said. “This plan is more efficient.” In December 2011, Steele County closed the detention center’s third pod due to inefficiencies, which saved the county about $279,000.
