A private prison company's chief executive officer traveled to Lexington, Ky., last summer to present a $100,000 check to a charity operated by U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, whose campaign fund-raising is under grand jury investigation in Texas, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported last Wednesday. Government-ethics groups criticize anonymous, unlimited gifts to the charities of powerful members of Congress and have called on DeLay, R-Texas, to identify donors to his non-profit DeLay Foundation for Kids, but he has refused to do so. Corrections Corporation of America CEO John Ferguson presented the check to DeLay's charity in August at a fund-raiser, the newspaper said the company confirmed last week. Ferguson announced the $100,000 gift before scores of guests at a fund-raising luncheon for DeLay's legal defense fund, organized by U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, Kentucky's senior congressman. CCA regularly gives to charities as well as election campaigns, but a spokeswoman said the company's charitable donations are not intended to win influence from government leaders. CCA, based in Nashville, Tenn., manages 63 prisons, the majority of them on contract for the federal government and 19 states. CCA operates three prisons in Kentucky and recently bid for the contract to run the state's newest prison in Elliott County. A former CCA executive now heads the state Corrections Department. |
