Plans to move Iowa’s most dangerous inmates to a $132 million new Fort Madison prison are six months behind schedule and counting as contractors struggle to fix a troubled geothermal heating and cooling system. The construction of the new, high-tech Iowa State Penitentiary, which will hold 800 maximum-security convicts, was approved by state lawmakers after two convicts made a daring escape in 2005 from the existing facility. The pair scaled a 30-foot limestone wall using a rope fashioned from upholstery materials taken from the prison furniture shop. The current prison was established in 1839, one year after Iowa became a territory, and parts of it predate the Civil War. Read More. |
